1998 PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE

THE SHOOTING STARS FC OF IBADAN SQUAD THAT WON THE PREMIER LEAGUE IN 1998, ARE YET TO GET THE PLOTS OF LAND PROMISED THEM BY THE THEN MILITARY ADMINISTRATOR OF THE STATE TWENTY YEARS DOWN THE LINE.

The team Head Coach Rafiu Salami went to Rojenny Stadium, Oba, Anambra State and defeated Udoji United 3-2 in a pulsating final league game of the season.

Members of that squad were:

According to Bode Oyewole who was the chairman of the Club in 1998, the oyo state government headed by commissioner of Police Oyakire Publicly announced rewards of one million naira and a plot of land to each of the players.

The coaching crew and board members were to get two million naira and  a plot of land each.

Three million naira and a plot of land to the club chairman and a plot to land to the Club chairman and five hundred thousand naira and a plot of land to each of the Administrative Staff also announced.

Oyewole disclosed that Certificates of occupancy, C of O, were issued in respect of the land at what is now Kolapo Ishola estate, Akobo, Ibadan but were withdrawn by Governor Lamidi Adesina when he was elected governor of the state in 1999 without given any reasons.

“Up till today, the victorious class  of 1998 in Shooting Stars  have not got their plots of land and their plots of land and their money.” he said.

It would be recalled that after winning the Premier League diadem in 1998, the Oluyole Warriors were relegated to the lower league the following year after the club battled severe crisis to play in CAF Champions League and domestic competitions.
